Report: April Robocall Volume Just Under 5 Billion, Amounts to 1,890 Robocalls per Second

Robocalls dropped slightly in April, according to a new report from YouMail, but considering that the robocalls still totaled 4.9 billion for the month (down from 5.2 billion in March), it’s unlikely that consumers noticed a decrease. The April level was equivalent to 163.5 million robocalls per day in April and 1,890 robocalls per second, according to the latest robocall volume measurements from YouMail.Robocall Volume

The robocalls continue in the multiple billions despite recent attempts by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Congress to address this vast consumer problem with new rules for caller ID authentications and new apps from carriers designed to block the calls.

Despite the slight drop in volume, the types of robocalls and the cities with the highest proliferations of the calls were unchanged from the previous month.

The top five robocall scams during the month were health/health insurance, interest rate, easy money, student loans, and search listing scams, according to YouMail. Yet health insurance/health-related scams dropped by over 30%, which YouMail attributed to a decline of over 80 million medical brace scam calls, likely due to the shutdown of the scam by law enforcement during the month. Easy money scams were down by nearly 30% as well, though there was no clear reason for the drop.

The cities, area codes and states with the highest volumes of robocalls in April were largely unchanged. However, Washington, D.C. surpassed Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as the city with the most robocalls per person. So far this year, areas in the southern part of the country received the most robocalls, just as they did for all of 2018.

“The good news is that April’s robocall volume is heading in a positive direction,” said YouMail CEO Alex Quilici, in a prepared statement. “But the bad news is that the total robocall volume so far this year is already over 20 billion calls, which is averaging over 5 billion robocalls per month.”

  1. As someone who worked in telecommunications for almost 35 years, these calls CAN be blocked by the carriers in “switch translations”. Why the FCC has failed to issue an order to the carriers to make that happen is beyond my comprehension!
