Nearly one-quarter (23%) of U.S. broadband households own three or more smart devices, according to a new report from Parks & Associates.

The research firm also said that nearly nine-in-ten (88%) of US households have broadband, and use a variety of devices for energy savings, security, convenience and traditional internet services like browsing, email, etc. More than 70% of smart home device and appliance owners say they frequently or always use the features of their smart home devices.

The average consumer has 13 connected devices, according to Parks Associates. That’s up from an average of nine devices five years ago as smart device purchasers continue to buy additional products. As a result, the percentage of US broadband households with three or more smart home devices has jumped by more than 64% in the past two years, going from 14% in 2018 to 23% at the end of 2020.

“Connected devices are forming deep integrations in consumers’ lifestyles, with convenience, comfort, and peace of mind the leading drivers of adoption,” said Patrice Samuels, Parks Associates senior analyst, in a prepared statement. “As their familiarity with smart home products increases, consumers will seek products that target their specific needs, which can range from lawn maintenance and irrigation to independent living and health monitoring. Co-marketing partnerships with brands in other industries such as energy providers, builders, and insurance companies will help expand awareness and distribution and connect consumers with the connected solutions they want and need.”
