The average person turns on his or her smartphone nearly every eight minutes, or 65.8 times per day, according to new research about daily smartphone usage from Strategy Analytics.

The peak usage times are between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. and between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The Strategy Analytics report is based on information from the research firm’s AppOptix continuous device usage monitoring app.

The research also found that people between 18 and 25 years of age are the heaviest smart phone users, averaging nearly 4.5 hours (254 minutes) per day so far this year. However, other age groups are just minutes behind, with those in the 26-to-45 age range averaging 249 minutes per day and those in the 36-45 group averaging 242 minutes daily. Those over age 46 are averaging 225 minutes per day.

Even with this high level of interaction and frequency that people use these devices, Strategy Analytics says that there is still a good amount of room for further growth.

According to a different report from the Consumer Technology Association, smartphone penetration has hit 87% of homes in the United States.
